Customers and businesses alike are wondering what makes Mitel Connect different from its predecessor as well as other on-premises IP-PBX platforms? Well, the answer to that question and many other commonly asked questions are here and what you find may shock you in the best way. Here are the top 10 most asked questions, plus two bonus questions about Mitel Connect and how it will benefit your business.

About Mitel Connect

The first commonly asked question that is usually on every new client’s mind is, what exactly is Mitel Connect? Well, Mitel Connect, otherwise known as “MiVoice Connect” or simply “Connect” is ShoreTel’s latest release of the on-premises IP-PBX Platform and follow-up of ShoreTel 14.2. While the 14.2 version and earlier versions will still be supported until September 2020, there will be limited updates and patch fixes, so it is critical to switch over to Connect as soon as you can.

Just how different is Mitel Connect from the last ShoreTel Platform? The Connect Platform is an upgrade from ShoreTel 14.2 with the latest patch updates, an entirely new user friendly interface, new desktop client, new management client, as well as other new features include contact center agent interface, Connect for mobile, Connect for Skype Business, Connect for Chrome, Connect softphone, and much more.

Is Mitel Connect the best business phone system around? While the answer to this question is subjective, Mitel’s MiVoice Connect remains in the top spot as one of the best-selling on-premises IP-PBX phone system currently on the market. That speaks volumes.

Planning and Execution

What are the system requirements for running Mitel Connect? There are very few requirements for upgrading to Connect, but your system should be prepared for some prerequisites. Here is a list of the minimum requirements needed:

  • All servers must be Windows Server 2012R2 or later
  • Must have 8GB of RAM, minimum
  • Must be on ShoreTel version 13.x or 14.x (additional charges may apply to upgrade from earlier versions)
  • If you are using Enterprise Contact Center, you will be on version 8.x or 9.x to upgrade to Connect Contact Center
  • Mobility needs to be on 8.x
  • 64bit Windows is required
  • VMWare ESXi 5.5 or 6 is required for utilizing any of the virtual switches and appliances.

Don’t meet some of these requirements, or not sure, not to worry – Protel Communications can make sure that your systems have the requirements to bring them up to compliance.

Can we still use our same desktop handsets? Of course! Just bear in mind that while all 200 and 500 series ShoreTel handsets, except for the IP210, will still be compatible on Connect, the EdgeGateway will not. The VPN Concentrator and the phones from the VPN concentrator will not work with the EdgeGateway. The 400 series phones will be the only option for use with the EdgeGateway.

Are you concerned about downtime? How long will it take to implement the system completely? 2-4 weeks. Planning is essential, and scheduling the upgrade in advanced will ensure that everyone is trained and prepared for the upgrade.

What if I don’t want to upgrade? We’re not forcing you. If you are happy with your system as it functions today, aren’t afraid of not being able to support it and don’t care about new features, you are more than welcome to stay on 14.2 or prior. But if you ever change your mind, Protel Communications is here to help.
